Day 971: Scottish Toast – Non-Limerick Verse: Castle Gylen

On Kerrera Island, the group visited the ruin of Castle Gylen, once owned by Clan MacDougall.  During one of the religious wars, General Leslie and a Covenanter army besieged and burned the castle.

Next we went to Castle Gylen
On the fair Kerrera Island
Clan MacDougall, from the highland
Made it their hame
‘Til Leslie came by boat and dry land
And put it to flame.

With his army, covenanter
Dour folk, no drink nor banter
Not like drunken Tam O’Shanter
Who in the dark,
Bewitched, called out to his enchanter
“Weel done, Cutty Sark.”

Day 970: Scottish Toast – Non-Limerick Verse: St. Conan’s Church

The tour visited a ruined castle in Argyle named Kilchurn, once a Clan Campbell stronghold.

The mighty castle called Kilchurn
Is now a ruin, no longer stern,
Campbell lairds once took a turn
As its proud thane
Now it’s the home of vine and fern,
Disuse its bane.

Day 968: Scottish Toast – Non-Limerick Verse: MacCaig’s Folly

In Oban, the group saw a replica of Rome’s Coliseum built by John MacCaig.  He died and left the project unfinished.  It became known as “MacCaig’s folly.

The coliseum on Oban’s height
May seem a sign of Roman might
Or then, again, a pompous blight
By John MacCaig
Who died without its end in sight,
He laid an egg.
