Laetitia took a tour group to Point Arena Lighthouse in Mendocino County on California’s North Coast. It was built in 1870 at a time when schooners hauling lumber from coastal mills to San Francisco were wrecked on nearby reefs at a rate of about one per month. The light with its first order Fresnel lens sent a beam 20 miles out to sea.

Has been rent by Point Arena Light
Saving vessels from grief
On a dangerous reef
That was many a sailor’s sad plight.
